Admission Trends of Chinese Students in the U.S.

The number of international students in the US is bigger than any other country in the world. In addition, the number has been increasing in the last ten years. The number of international students raised 40% compared to ten years ago, according to a new report. The international students are great assets to the U.S. They help the American students learn more about the other culture and diversify the campus. What’s more, the international students and their parents contributed nearly $24 billion to the U.S. economy.

Since the academic year of 2009/2010, China has replaced India as sending the largest number of international students to the U.S. In the academic year of 2012/2013, it continues to send about 235,000 students to the U.S, with an increase of 21% compared to the previous year. The number of international students from China, India and Korea (the top three countries) together composes up to 50% of the total number of international students in the U.S.

California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Illinois have more international students than the others. New York City tops U.S. cities hosting international students.

There are more than 8,000 international students in each university listed above. And according to the report, there are several hundred U.S. universities with more than 1,000 international students.

Some numbers about Chinese students in the U.S.

Since the academic year of 2009/2010, there has been at least an increase of 21% with regard to the number of Chinese students studying in the U.S. every year, including the year of 2012/2013.

In academic year of 2012/2013, 235,597 Chinese students came to the U.S. for higher education. Most of them are pursuing graduate studies, and nearly 40% or them are undergraduate students.

Among all the international students in the U.S, approximately 30% of them came from Mainland China.
